slow the express

remember Ramon
how we laughed at the delirium
of the pokey seat in the lane
after the readings at La Mama

a promise is a wading thing
and we held a hand each

when you made me write
all seven days to week a month
that stretch of gluten by a wonky light
the way words fall to combine

a separate secret of glow worms
or a far village window by window

I said no man you’re better than me
you hugged my wafting shoulder
invited me to the drinks
but the last train stalled us there

in the slipstream between friendship and life

Blank Rune Press asked for contributions to a memorial publication for the untimely death of Lawyer, Writer, Teacher, Worker’s Advocate, and Poet Ramon Loyola in 2018. Many of us new Ramon through the internet, and briefly in person. He was the best of us, at our best.
