Letter to Neruda, broken glass

I will not read you again Pablo
the dusky maiden defence
your unbridled hot manhood

what a lying cur you were
those words of silk intelligence
over such coddled remorse

hungry thousands at your readings
the artifice of immunity
all cracked clay in the hearts of men

your words now dust from rain
the pages leak for closing

diplomat claims for service
did Pinochet and cancer kill you
the torture slow

as the wooden hundred sonnets
used as kindling this cold night
so barren in your conscience

let erasure be the legacy
your regret as hollow
as the empty shelves should be

your phrases large pebbles
rolled back into your throat

  1. I knew very little of Pablo Neruda the poet, but now I’ve read you and the review of his biography, I don’t think I’ll bother. I’ll stick to Margaret Atwood – now there’s an activist poet for you!
